Oh dear...another blog post about bullying, right?
You've been there, I've been there, we all have. We've even been the bullies--don't deny it. At my highschool, there is not one single day that I don't witness someone being thrown around, talked down on, or talked about. Not even on Anti-Bullying Day...Pathetic, eh? I have been a witness, a victim, and a bully. I'm sure we all have. Telling parents, teachers, or other staff, doesn't ever seem to completely work. So when it doesn't, stand up for your friends, and for yourself. In most schools, there are zero-tolerance policies for bullying, so if it gets out of hand, adults will help you.
Dear Bully,
Just stop it. Even if you say something or do something hurtful towards another person by accident, don't push the guilt away, wallow in it and apologize--right away. Maybe you were bullied, maybe you think it makes you look cool in front of your friends, but bullying in any way, shape, or form is inexcusable. It is such a horrible feeling, to feel excluded, unwanted, hated. So from now on, try your best to make each and every person to feel welcome in your presence, and don't make them feel bad (even if you think they deserve it).
Dear Witness,
Stand up for the victim!!! I cannot stress that enough. I can't count how many times a day I watch a by-stander not intervene in a bullying situation. What have you got to lose? Are you afraid the bully will torture you, too? Get over it. It's easier to defeat a bully in numbers, believe me. Before you ask, yes, I do stand up for the victims when no others do. If you do not help the victim when you witness a bullying situation, you are no better than the bully at this point. So help yourself by helping the victim, and stand by them for as long as they need.
Dear Victim,
I know how you feel, really, I do. Just stay strong, do all the things they tell you in primary/middle school. Ignore it, tell staff at your school, stand up for yourself, and when things get out of hand, get help from your friends, family, and adults at your school. Just remember, someone will help you. Don't stop doing the things you love just because someone thinks differently about it, embrace your ideas, and stand out! You are safe. You will always be safe.
If you, or someone you know is being verbally or physically abused by a bully at school or anywhere else, you need to get help. Get at 'er!
